Edinburgh and Lake District 2001

Not really a holiday, and not the best time of the year to visit, but we had no choice. Michael's Aunt Muriel had died and we wanted to go to the funeral. Michael drove from Swindon to Edinburgh in one day. It's about 400 miles and almost all motorway. We stayed in a cold room in dreary B&B, up multiple flights of stairs with no lift. We attended the funeral and then met members of the family at the wake at his Aunt's house, many who Michael had not seen for years. This included Michael meeting his father again after almost 40 years. He had no idea what his father looked like and had to have him pointed out. We are not sure who was more shocked at the meeting - Michael or his father!

Despite the winter weather we took the opportunity to visit the Edinburgh sights including Edinburgh Castle, art galleries and museums. Michael knows Edinburgh quite well from previous visits to his Aunt as well as business trips many years ago. We ate well and Rhonda enjoyed exploring Jenner's department store. We had passed the Lake District on the way up and took the opportunity to drive through it on the way back home.
